  • BIRCH BOXES – Russian Keepsake Boxes

  • “Birch" wood and bark played a large part in daily life in old Russia. Birch wood was used to build houses, make tools and utensils. Inside the house Birch (bark from the Birch tree) was used as house insulation (between the outer wood and interior walls), as personal insulation (between layers of clothes), as icons (for traveling) and containers (it was said you could keep salted fish in a container for years - rinse it out and drink wine from it). As with most household items the birch boxes were decoratively carved with religious and folk motifs. ). Birch tree bark is an ecologically clean natural material with antibacterial properties.

  • If you traveled to Russia in Communist times you probably shopped for souvenirs at the "Berizovka" (Birch) shop.

  • NOTE TO THE BUYER – Each box is made from “birch” from a tree. If you see a line or two in any part of the design, it is the “natural marks” of the tree bark. The box is not defective.
