Traditional Eastern Cross. The outer Cross is a lobed Greek Byzantine Cross with an inset of the traditional Russian Three Barred Cross. The Three Barred Cross has its origin in Byzantium and was adopted by the Russian Church as its own. The top bar represents the sign placed over Jesus' head. The central bar is the cross bar on which Jesus' arms were extended. The lower slanted bar pointing up ward to heaven points to Dismas the Good Thief who that day was in Paradise.
The verso of the Cross has the inscription in Russian "Lord Save Us."
