the Healer the female physician
The Virgin is pictured with the Christ Child in a playful gesture with his Mother. The Virgin is referred to as the “healer” and as the “female physician.” The icon was given to a midwife who was very devout in her devotion to the Mother of God. The midwife died shortly after receiving the icon. A church was built in honor of the icon in Loutraki.
The monastery there became a center of pilgrimage where many wonderous healings took place. The Virgin here is honored for her devotion to Christ and to his disciples after the Resurrection
