VIRGIN the Unfading Bloom - the Ever Fragrant Flower -
The Theotokos (Mother of God) holds in her left hand a regally dressed Christ Child standing on as altar (taken from the Akathist in which the Virgin is addressed "Hail, living Table that Virgin held the Bread of Life"). Christ holds a scepter and orb as the King of all. In the Virgin's righthand is a bouquet of blooming flowers symbolizing the Virgin's eternal purity (Virginity). In an Akathist the Church prays "Thou art the Root of virginity and the Unfading Blossom of purity. Also the"stars" on the Virgin's head and chest also symbolize her eternal virginity. Flowers in full bloom surround the sacred image.
In popular Russian usage this icon is given to school children and students invoking the Mother of God to aid them in their studies
