EGGS CRYSTAL IMPERIAL SIZE: 5

HAND ETCHED PASCHA-EASTER EGGS – a wonderful Russian Christian tradition

I want to share their tradition because they are both a Christian tradition and an individual work of art. These are no longer made – they are individual treasures

· The egg is an ancient Christian tradition which the Russian church embraced with uniquely Russian art forms including hand blown and etched crystal/glass eggs, eggs with icons on them as well folk decorations.

· Of all the traditional Russian arts one of the oldest is the HAND BLOWN AND ETCHED EGGS. It is believed these originated in the early 1800s. If you visited Russia in the past you may have seen these very special eggs in exclusive shops. I am sorry to say the few manufacturing artels of these eggs have all closed.

These eggs are hand blown in the region around Smolensk, Russia. Because they are hand blown the size and color varies.

The eggs are “freehand” etched by a trained artisan in an artel in St Petersburg, Russia.

The designs are traditional – Imperial Romanov double headed eagle, floral and floral design. Each traditional design is enhanced with the artisan’s knowledge of Russian decorative folk art.

The egg is then covered in gold paint, baked at a high temperature and then cleaned by hand.

How to give the egg – by tradition one gives the egg to a loved one or someone special with three kisses (in honor of the Trinity) on alternating cheeks with the greeting “Christ Is Risen” to which is responded “Indeed He Is Risen!” What a perfect way to share your faith with a loved one.

ALEXANDRA INTERNATIONAL is fortunate to have acquired the remaining stock of these hand etched eggs – what quantities we have is limited and they will not be made again by these artels. What a perfect way to share your faith with a loved one.
