In the Russian tradition it is customary to have a set of matching icons of Christ and the Theotokos or Mother of God. Matched sets such as these were customary gifts for a bride and groom. The icons were given as a gift to the new couple - they were placed on the altar in the church for forty days before the wedding, used in the wedding ceremony and taken home to displayed in the new family's icon corner.
